China Glaze Nail Polish in ‘So Blue Without You’ Shade

Lovin’ my 2nd China Glaze nail polish in blue color

China Glaze has so many beautiful shades to choose from (pic from China Glaze website)

Doing my own pedicure and manicure somehow has a therapeutic effect on my very busy work and family life. I admit that it would be nice to always have time and money for regular visit to the nail salon but not all of us have the luxury, do we? So I often do my own nail service. I enjoy buying different nail colors and experimenting with them, most of the time on my toenails. Doing my manicure can be challenging as I do a lot of washing. It’s tough to maintain nail polish to be chip-free when you wash kids stuff regularly.

I’ve purchased 2 China Glaze nail polish colors from Philippines when I went back home a few months ago. The green color is very nice and I love how different lighting changes the sheen of the polish (check my review HERE).
This time, I’ve tested the 2nd color – So Blue Without You – that is a metallic royal blue shade. And I had time to try it on my fingernails.

I used it with my other nail care products:

Step 1 – Butter London Melt Away to clean up excess cuticle
Step 2 – Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Nail Hardener as base coat
Step 3 – China Glaze Blue Nail Polish
Step 4 – Sally Hansen Diamond Shine as top coat

The color is flattering and it works well with my skin tone. I love the sheen of metallic colors as it plays around with lighting. Another good thing about China Glaze nail polishes is that it contains nail hardeners so it does help to make my nails less prone to chipping. It works together with my Sally Hansen Nail Hardener base coat.

Covo Cosmetics – Luxe for Less

It’s wonderful to discover a beauty and cosmetics brand that aims to make beauty accessible to all without burning a hole in the pocket.
I first encountered Covo in 2012 while doing my store visit routine in Berjaya Times Square for a brand that I used to manage. When I saw the simple, sleek counter design in mainly black color, I already found it interesting. Colors pop up nicely against black and it was easy to be captured by Covo’s color collections.
On my birthday last June, my good friend, Sulo, generously gave me a beautiful set of Covo cosmetics. She’s a dear friend who understands my beauty addiction (haha!).  My present, a set of 5 items, were neatly arranged in a box inside a paper bag adorned with a French-themed drawing. I liked this feminine and artistic touch of the brand. It’s not the typical photo of a celebrity or model but this one also manages to show style, fashion and glamour.

I haven’t tested all the items yet but I’m excited to talk about what I got. There’s just something very clever with Covo’s items. The prices fall into the affordable level but each product is very competitive and worth trying. After all, beauty and style should be accessible to many, not just the rich, isn’t it? Let’s see what’s inside my present:

HD Picturesque Primer – RM69.00
Made in Korea
High definition, mineral enriched, conceals wrinkles & pores, deeply nourishes, prolongs foundation wear
I think that this is amazingly affordable. Now, High-Definition makeup is not just limited to those who can spend a lot on cosmetics. I’m just finishing my current HD primer but I’m very excited to try this one soon!

Fearless Waterproof Shadow Liner – RM35.00
Made in Germany
Waterproof, 8 hours wear, Shadow and Liner in 1, Highly Pigmented, Glides Smoothly
This liner comes with a built-in sharpener, isn’t that genius? Now, I don’t need to find my sharpener, or even buy one. The texture is great and easy to blend.

Stardust Quad – RM65.00
Made in Italy
Highly Pigmented, Blends Evenly, Creamy and Smooth, Nourished with Vitamin E, Contains skincare benefits
I find it great that this eyeshadow set contains vitamin E. That’s makeup plus skincare in 1 product!

3 Free Nail Polish – RM29.00
Made in Australia
No formaldehyde, No toluene, No DBP
Well-pigmented, glossy, long lasting
Most 3 Free nail polishes in the market would cost a lot more than this. And it’s great to find a brand that can offer a 3 Free nail polish at this price.

Essential 3 Brush Set – RM89.00
Powder brush, liquid foundation brush, and eye shader brush
Compact sizes, comes with a 3-brush pouch, travel-friendly
It’s not easy to get good quality, affordable makeup brushes but this set is probably one of the best you can find. I’ve started using the liquid foundation and eye shader brush; they’re very effective in makeup application and the bristles don’t fall off even with regular cleaning. Good ones!

Thanks again to my good friend who gave me this makeup set. Stay tuned for my upcoming reviews of the items!

China Glaze Nail Polish in Lovely Green Color

My first time to try China Glaze nail polish and a green color for my nails…
(photo from China Glaze FB page)
Oh, I haven’t done my manicure in a looong time. My pedicure is always done, though. I’m someone who cannot survive a work week without my toenails painted! Yes, yes, say I’m vain but I love my open-toe shoes and I find it necessary to have colored toenails. I normally just do it myself except a few weeks ago when I had it done at Nails Garden in e@Curve in preparation for a wedding. They have good service there, I must say. My pedicure lasted for 2 weeks and the foot massage was great.
Anyway, back to my topic. I haven’t tried China Glaze nail polishes before. I’ve had Butter London, Ciate, Elianto, Sally Hansen and probably a few more. But during my visit to Philippines 2 weeks ago, I saw China Glaze and noticed that it’s cheaper so yeah I was enticed to buy. And the sales lady was very friendly, too. Since she’s very nice, I bought 2 colors, hehe.

First color I picked was the metallic blue, code So Blue Without You (1258), then the green one, Agro (1127). Hmmm, I’ve never tried a green nail polish color before and this one looked attractive to me. It wasn’t the typical ‘leafy’ green shade. And since I am managing a brand with green color, I thought it was about time to have 1 green nail polish, ta-da!

I excitedly tested my new China Glaze nail polish last weekend and I’m so in love with it! I never thought I could get away with green on my nails! I used to dislike green but this China Glaze shade is just lovely. I love how different lighting changes the shade and sheen of the polish.

I used it with my other nail care products:
  • Step 1 – Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Nail Hardener as base coat
  • Step 2 – China Glaze Green Nail Polish
  • Step 3 – Sally Hansen Diamond Shine as top coat

Oh and I use my hair dryer to assist in faster drying in between each step.

My green nail polish is now on it’s fourth day and I’d say I’m very pleased with its long-lasting wear. I’m someone who regularly washes oily dishes, I handwash my undergarments with my bare hands and I wash my hands very often within the day. And so far, the nail polish still stays nicely with very minimal fading on the edges! This is amazing. Normally, my nail polish will chip off because of my daily washing habits but China Glaze survived nicely!

And because it’s only minimal fading on the tips of my nails, it’s very easy to retouch. Love my China Glaze purchase and I think it’s worth the price.

Next up will be the China Glaze blue nail polish soon!

Beautiful Nail Polish and Makeup Collection at Inglot

I still remember the first time I was captivated by an Inglot shop. It was at Sunway Pyramid in 2011. That was the first time I saw the brand and I didn’t even know how the name was supposed to be pronounced. Is it ‘eeeng-lot’? Is it ‘eeeng-lohw’? Is it ‘eeeng-laht’? Well, it’s pronounced ‘eeeng-lot’. Inglot cosmetics was founded by Polish cosmetics maker Wojciech Inglot, who unfortunately died at the age of 57 in February this year.

Inglot Cosmetics Eye-Popping color collection
There’s something about Inglot boutiques that just captures attention. First, the shop design is simple yet it really makes colors stand out and pop to your eyes. The fixtures are in shiny, solid black against cream white walls and floors, making colors sparkle against it. The graphics also use solid black background that also makes colors gleam deliciously everywhere in the store. Creative and effective graphic and interior design is undeniably a great tandem for this brand.

The first Inglot item I bought was a 2-piece eye shadow palette. I was so fascinated with the Freedom System that allows you to pick and mix the colors you want in your set. It’s such an enlightening thrill to pick the colors you like and create your own eye shadow set. Aren’t you tired of having those eye shadow palettes in your vanity kit and end up having 1 or 2 colors that you barely use? Inglot’s freedom system totally eliminates that waste of money. With their vast range of colors, it’s easy for anyone to pick colors based on their preferences. You can choose 1, 2, 4, 5 squares in whatever color you want. Look at these delicious colors!

The Freedom system is also applicable for blushes, lip color and pressed powder. This is great for both makeup artists and those who simply love makeup.
A few days ago, I wanted to buy a new nail polish color and while walking along the brightly lit hallway of Mid Valley Megamall, which is still my favorite shopping mall since I arrived in Malaysia, Inglot once again caught my eye. And who wouldn’t be caught by this luscious display of nail color?
inglot nail polish color collection
Inglot Nail Polish Collection

The nail color collection is beautifully displayed in such a way that you can see all the colors popping in one glance. No need to rotate the fixture, no need to stand close and look down. Gorgeous and effective display that makes me want to grab them all and have a wall display in my own room like this.
Inglot nail polishes contain no toluene, no formaldehyde, no DBP (dibutyl phthalate), no camphor. A poster on top of the nail display announces O2M Revolutionary Breathable Formula, which is totally new to me. The sales assistant explained that this type of nail polish allows oxygen and moisture pass through! Mr. Wojciech Inglot developed this product to improve nail health. According to reports, the O2M nail polish has become very popular among Muslims because of its porous properties that make it acceptable to wear even during prayers. Inglot has recently announced that their product is ‘Halal certified’.
Among all the eye-popping colors, I picked this one in red-pink shade. I know its tempting to grab several polishes but this is my first time to try Inglot nail enamel so I have to do some test drive before I ‘indulge’.

My Inglot nail enamel pick for that day

I was also looking for a glamorous red matte lipstick and this vast display was very irresistible. Like the nail color display, the lip color collection display also allows you to see all the shades in one glance. To help you in choosing, there are also square swatches of colors in acrylic placed in front of each shade.

Want to be posh & taller without the pain? You’ll love this Charles & Keith Wedge!

Wearing high-heeled shoes can be very challenging and painful especially if you have to endure it for long hours. But for the sake of looking stylish and chic at work or when attending events, we, ladies, bear the ever-tiring and quite painful experience of wearing those sexy stilettos.

The good thing with fashion is that it has been evolving to be functional than just simply chic. I’ve been a big fan of wedges or platforms for the past few years, more so because I had to find a painless way of walking taller than wearing fancy high heels. And wedges nowadays have become so fashionable and have definitely become part of making a statement. Admittedly, I would have preferred to wear flats if we just talk about ultimate comfort but the desire to be more stylish and to walk tall at work is just inevitable.

So I’m just delighted to share my latest favorite pair of wedges from Charles & Keith.  This is an open-toe, slingback style with combined textures of faux snake skin and velvet. I love the 4-inch high platform and it’s not tiring or painful at all. I’ve worn it for a week at work and I just love my height with it. Well, I’m 5’4″ but an additional 4-inch height wouldn’t hurt, right?

Charles & Keith wedges/platform, open-toe, slingback shoes

Of course, I wouldn’t recommend this to ladies who’d need to stand for hours continuously. But it’s simply perfect to wear for an event and a better option than high heels if you’re the type who feels the pain and discomfort with the latter.

Charles & Keith has a lovely collection of wedges and platforms in different styles and colors. I personally prefer slingback and open-toe wedges as the grip on my feet is better with the sling than normal closed shoes. Open-toe shoes are perfect for showing a glimpse of those polished toenails.

Open-toe shoes are perfect for showing polished toenails

So if you ever need a pair of stylish shoes without the pain, go for wedges or platforms. You’d have the extra inches you want and still be as posh as you can be. Walk tall, be chic and smile!

Fashion Nail Sticker for Beautiful Nails

I’ve been using nail polish and a lot of different types, styles and brands but I have to admit that I haven’t tried using nail stickers before. I got the idea to finally try it because of a dear friend who wittingly asked me, “Why don’t you just use nail stickers?” when I was telling her about the long wait for nail polish to dry, especially on hand nails. I found out later on, though, that she herself hasn’t tried nail stickers!

So I decided to finally try the thing. I found a lovely, posh set from Sasa. They have several brands and styles available but I was looking for a pinkish or purplish color. I picked First Kiss Nail Dress in Marabou which has a mix of colors and faux colored stones.

The box says FASHION THAT STICKS, LASTS UP TO 10 DAYS, which caught my interest. Keeping manicure in place and chip-free has always been a challenge for me. Being a working mother makes it even more challenging as I need to keep washing stuff and my son. Pedicure is not so challenging; it just stays nice and chip-free for more than a week. In fact, I only re-do my pedicure every 2 weeks. Whereas my manicure needs changing every week. BUTTER LONDON does a very good job for my manicure but if I wanted something more posh with artistic designs, I’d be lazy to do it with manual application by myself, unless it’s something like this nail sticker.

First Kiss Nail Dress in Marabou

Unfortunately, the back of the box isn’t much help on giving more info and exact procedure on how to properly apply it on your nails. The pictures are quite self-explanatory but I was looking for more tips and if there are any other things to remember when applying it, like: is there a drying time, do you need to apply something first before putting the sticker on, etc.

Back of First Kiss Nail Dress box

The box contains 28 pieces of the nail sticker in different shapes and sizes to fit the toes and nails, and a nail file.

Since the instructions were not quite clear, I applied my own techniques for application.

STEP 1:  I wiped my nails clean with nail polish remover.

STEP 2: Carefully choose the right size and shape for each nail.

STEP 3: Using a pair of scissors, I cut each sticker for the shape of the base of my nails. Don’t worry about the edge of your nails yet, adjust the shape of the base first

STEP 4:  Stick the nail sticker, starting slowly on the base first, where your cuticles are. Then press slowly from the middle going to the sides. This is to prevent crumpling. Don’t press the entire sticker at once.

STEP 5: Using a nail cutter, cut the excess sticker from the tip. I find it best to cut the sticker and my nails a bit to ensure that I’ve perfected the size.

It wasn’t very easy to do, especially for a first-timer. It took me a while to finish my hands and toes, at least an hour. The cutting and shaping takes some time, unless your nails are perfectly shaped based on the sticker shape. But it was worth the effort. Look at the result! I seriously loved it!

My nails with First Kiss Nail Dress

The ultimate question: does it really last up to 10 days?

For toes, yes, it does last. I am now wearing it for the 7th day and the stickers on my toes still look like they were freshly-applied. I am sure it will stay for several days more or even another week. It will also be very easy to retouch since you don’t need drying time. You just simply take out the sticker, clean your nails with nail polish remover, let it dry then apply a new sticker.

For hands, it did last and stay chip-free this entire week. But I do take extra care such as wearing plastic gloves when washing dishes, washing clothes even while bathing. After 4 days, though, you’ll notice some fading on the tips as with normal nail polish but there was no chipping at all since these are stickers. And I loved it for that.

Will I wear nail stickers again? YES! This is absolutely perfect especially if you’re attending a special occasion soon like maybe a wedding, big party, etc. In my case, I need lovely nails when I am about to host events for my job. So, yeah, I love this First Kiss Nail Dress. Not necessarily every  10 days but maybe once a month for those very important events.

Step-by-Step Guide to Applying Long-Lasting Nail Polish

We all love having pretty nails but it’s always a challenge to keep them pretty as long as possible, a week at least for me. Keeping nail polish on my toes is not a problem, it can even stay as long as 2 weeks with minimal retouching required. My toes are always nail polished, I love keeping it that way since I always use open-toed shoes.

Manicure, on the other hand, is just tough to maintain, especially if you have a child and need to do a lot of chores and washing. So here are some simple step-by-step guide and tips for those who encounter a manicure challenge like me.

STEP 1: Remove or push back excess cuticle from your nails.

I often get lazy to do this before. But removing excess cuticle (the strip of hardened skin that you see on the base and sides of your nails) makes the nail polish look more even and clean. There’s no need to use a nipper or cut the cuticles. I just use Butter London Melt Away, then push the excess cuticle back. Wipe off the excess product from your nails with a wet wipe or cloth.

Butter London Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator

STEP 2: Wipe your nails with nail polish remover (yes, even if there’s no nail polish there).

This is to ensure that your nails are free of dirt, oils and other impurities before you apply the base coat. The base coat needs a clean surface so that it stays longer.

STEP 3: Apply a clear base coat first, not your color polish.

This is very important for keeping your nails pinkish and free from nail polish stain as well as making the color polish stay longer. The base coat is similar to a makeup primer, it provides a better ‘canvas’ for the color to be applied. It also makes it easier for you to remove your color nail polish later on because it’s not applied directly on your plain nails. Ever had a hard time removing your color nail polish before when you didn’t apply a base coat? Or ever noticed a yellowish stain on your nails?

I use Sally Hansen Diamond Shine Base & Top Coat for my base coat.

STEP 4: Now you can apply your beloved color nail polish. Make sure that you allow your base coat to dry for at least 3 minutes.

Reminder even if most of you know this already — always start with your non-dexterous hand. What do I mean? If you are right-handed, start with the left hand first so you avoid spoiling your polished nails on the right hand.

STEP 5: Apply your clear top coat after allowing the color nail polish to dry at least 3 minutes.

It would be good if you can extend your top coat to the edges of your nails, that part that you use to scratch your skin or something. This spot is where water seeps in and chips your nail polish. With the top coat, it will be a few days before water can break in. It takes some skill to apply it there, keep trying.

I use Butter London Hardwear Quick Topcoat.

STEP 6: After 1 or 2 minutes, apply an express or quick drying oil.

Remember, this doesn’t mean that you can immediately go around and doing things loosely with your hands or nails. The drying oil just makes the polish non-sticky. Ideally, you should allow your nail polish to set for several hours, 2 hours at least, before you do some washing. And if you do need to wash, wear plastic gloves.

I use Sephora Express Drying Oil.

And here are all the 6 items I used…

Just some additional tips:

1) Try not to do anything with your hands within at least 2 hours after applying your last coat.
2) When you need to wash the dishes or anything, wear some plastic gloves. I bought this box of disposable plastic gloves from Daiso at only RM5 for 100 pieces and it’s worth having this around. Protect your nails from too much water as much as you can.

3) If you have time, retouch your clear top coat after or every 3 days to protect your polish.
4) Don’t use your nails to remove staple wires, remove adhesive tape, open a bag of chips, lift the soda can tab and the like.
5) Moisturize. Apply cuticle oil on your nails daily. Moisturize your hands and feet with lotion or cream regularly.

Have pretty toe nails and hand nails, ladies!

Lovely Nails with Butter London

I recently fell in love with this nail polish brand, Butter London, that I came across with while shopping for a liquid foundation at Sephora Starhill. Aside from the lovely glitter color that got my attention, the product names are also quite clever.

Well, I’ve also been searching for a really good top coat that dries fast and makes the nail color last longer so I decided to give these items a try. I don’t normally go to a nail salon to do my nails, not that I have time to go as well. I prefer to do my own nails as I’ve developed this fear from nippers. Some stylists just have this urge to keep nipping the dry skin until they accidentally cut you to bleed (ugh). So since several years back, I just do it myself. And it’s quite fun, too, to experiment with different colors myself and save time (and money) to just do it at home.

My wonderful Butter London collection: Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator, Hardwear Quick Topcoat and 3 Free Nail Lacquer.

First step is to use the Melt Away Cuticle Eliminator (RM64/ 17.5ml). This is for removing dead skin cells for gentle cuticle removal, eliminating the need to nip (yes!). Since I really hate the nipping part, this item is great for me. It’s very easy to use. Shake well, apply to overgrown cuticles using the bottle applicator, wait for 2 minutes, gently push back cuticle then remove debris with a soft brush. Clean excess product from nails after use.

Apply a clear nail polish as your base coat. Then it’s time for the nail color: 3 Free Nail Lacquer in Lovely Jubbly (RM54/ 11ml). At first, I wondered why it’s called ‘3 Free’. It has NO Formaldehyde, NO Toluene, NO DBP — so it makes this nail color 3 Free. For those who are not familiar, formaldehyde is an organic compound used in a lot of industrial products, disinfectants and more, and is toxic to both animals and humans. Toluene is a clear, insoluble liquid used to dissolve paint, thinners and more, and is also considered toxic. DBP or dibutyl phthalate was used in nail polishes and other items but has been banned in many countries as it poses as a possible risk for abnormalities on physical development.

So this Butter London Nail Lacquer clarifies that it’s free from those toxic ingredients. The color I picked was named Lovely Jubbly and it is truly lovely. It is a glitter-filled purplish hue which is also very easy to apply. Simply put 1 coat then let it dry for at least 2 minutes. If you want a darker shade, you can put another layer. But 1 layer for me is just nice.

After letting the nail color dry for at least 2 minutes, it’s time to apply the Hardwear Quick Topcoat (RM64/ 17.5ml). It’s a quick dry, ultra glossy, non-toxic that protects the nail lacquer/ nail color and extends the life of the manicure. Simply apply 1 coat over the nail lacquer.

As always, I also apply drying oil on top of my nail polish. I found this Sephora Express Drying Oil (RM35/ 7ml) which is a great companion to everyone who loves polishing their nails. Wait at least 2 minutes after applying your top coat then apply 1 drop of the drying oil on each nail.

My finished manicure…my normal digicam doesn’t do justice to the glitter effect, though. Quite hard for me to shoot with one hand if I use my DSLR so this shot was taken with the digicam (need to get a tripod or an assistant photographer, haha!). But the glitter nail polish is more glamorous and pretty in actual sight!

My verdict…in love with this Butter London nail collection! Will get more colors soon!
